October is Non-GMO Month!

In honor of Non-GMO month, I thought I would encourage you to watch the trailer for “Food Fight" (and then watch the entire movie!).

We need to take back our power and start demanding to know what is in our foods - our lives, literally, depend on it!

Here are a few ideas of ways you can participate in non-GMO month:

-Ask the waiters or cooks at restaurants if they are using genetically modified ingredients.  If the answer is yes, or if they can't tell you for sure, don’t eat it!

-Ask for GMO-free dairy alternatives at the coffee shops if you don’t do dairy.  Pass on the java if they don’t provide that option.

-Do your own research about GMO's and share what you have learned with family and friends (responsibletechnology.org and nongmoproject.org are great resources for learning).

-Cook and share a meal with family and friends using only organic and/or non-GMO ingredients and notice how much better the food tastes.

-Write letters or visit local food producers and ask them to at least label if their ingredients are genetically modified; better yet, ask them to use non-GMO ingredients.

You can come up with your own ideas as well as to how to get involved and educate and increase awareness.  It doesn’t have to be anything huge - every little action makes a difference!

In the words of the famous chef, food activist, and Chez Panisse Restaurant owner (and one of my heroes), Alice Waters, “Good food should be a right, not a privilege.”

It’s time to reclaim that right!!
